Girl feared drowned

Silchar, Aug. 4: A schoolgirl, identified as Champa Malakar, 14, is feared to have been drowned when an overcrowded boat capsized in the Rukni, a tributary of the Barak river, in Assamís Cachar district yesterday.

District magistrate H.K. Deb Mahanta last night ordered an inquiry into the mishap, to be conducted by circle officer Jessica R. Lalsim.

Seizure: Police raided the house of Ajit Phukan, a fair price shopkeeper, at Kathkotia in Jorhat today and seized 84 bags of PDS sugar, suspected to be sold in the black market.

Temple theft: Thieves stole two donation boxes from a Shiv temple at Amolapatty in Golaghat district last night.

Youth held: A youth from Mokokchung in Nagaland, A. Lam Ao, was arrested at the Nagaland state transport bus stand at Mariani in Jorhat. A 22mm pistol, a nine-bore gun and two cartridges were recovered from him. Ao told the police he was on his way to deliver the arms to a person in Nagajanka.

Arrest: Nagaon police arrested a senior advocate, Partha Pratim Borbora, and his two friends in connection with a fraud case.
