Prayer meet for Sangma

Shillong, June 29: The youth wing of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Meghalaya will organise inter-religious prayer meetings on Sunday for the success of Purno Agitok Sangma in the presidential polls.

Disclosing this over phone, NCP (youth wing) working president Clifford Nengnong said the prayer meetings would be organised at the NCP office in Shillong and also at Mawkyrwat in West Khasi Hills and Jowai in Jaintia Hills from 5pm onwards. “We invite people from all walks of life to participate in the prayer meeting,” Nengnong said.

The same day, a prayer meeting will be held at Sangma’s residence at Dakopgre in Tura, which would also mark the maiden presidential campaign of the Garo hills strongman.

Sangma had filed his nomination yesterday in New Delhi. He is pitted against UPA-nominee Pranab Mukherjee in the July 19 battle for Raisina Hill.

The former Lok Sabha Speaker is scheduled to arrive at Guwahati airport tomorrow afternoon before embarking on his journey back home in Tura, to seek the blessings of his people as he readies for the fight against Pranab.

While Sangma had resigned from the primary membership of the NCP, the state unit here is still intact with 13 legislators and a huge number of party workers.
