2 killed in car accident

Balurghat, May 4: Two persons, including the inspector-in-charge of Harirampur police station, were killed when the car they were travelling in collided with a truck on NH34 at Panishala near Raiganj this morning.

James Kujur, the additional superintendent of police, South Dinajpur, said Nilesh Ghosh, 46, had gone to a court in Jalpaiguri yesterday in connection with a case and he was accompanied by Sarwar Hossain, 34, the owner of the car. They were on the way back to South Dinajpur when the car had a head on collision with a ten-wheeled truck. Ghosh and Hossain were taken to the Raiganj district hospital where the doctors pronounced them dead. Ghosh was a resident of Ratua in Malda district.

Drug death

Malda: Jiten Mondal, a resident of Green Park near Englishbazar, died on Friday after he was allegedly waylaid by a gang that drugged and robbed him the previous day. Police said Jiten was driving towards Malda on Thursday night and it was suspected that he had been waylaid on NH34 in Gajole. The robbers drugged the 40-year-old before driving away on his vehicle. Jiten was admitted to the Malda district hospital on Friday morning and he died there later.

Body found

Islampur: A manís body was recovered from Panjipara near Goalpokhor on Friday. Police suspect that he was murdered as the body bore strangulation marks.

Trade summit

Siliguri: A business summit titled Destination: North Bengal will be held here on Saturday. The event will be organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in association with the north Bengal development department and the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority. ICC sources said issues related to the tea industry and tourism sector and the development of Siliguri as an IT and business hub would be discussed at the event.

Math meet

Siliguri: An event was organised at the North Bengal Science Centre in Matigara on Friday to celebrate the National Year of Mathematics.
