Examinee killed on road

Malda, March 7: A Madhyamik examinee was killed and two persons were injured in separate accidents near Ratua today.

Police said Mumtaz Khatun, 16, a resident of Bahircup died when he was hit by a truck. Mumtaz was going to a nearby school to know the date of the physical education examination when the accident happened. The truck was seized but the driver managed to escape. In the second incident, Ismail Sheikh and his son Obedul were injured when a truck hit them on the Malda-Kaliachak state highway near Kaliagram. They have been admitted to the Ratua block hospital.

Two held

Siliguri: Two persons were arrested from Hatighisha on Wednesday and a suspected leopard skin was recovered from them. Amit Singh is a resident of Kharibari and Sagar Roy is from Raiganj, police said.

Bomb scare

Alipurduar: An abandoned transistor triggered a bomb scare near the India-Bhutan border at Phuentsholling on Thursday. Police said their counterparts in Bhutan have seized the transistor.

Mud death

Alipurduar: Radhika Burman, 28, a resident of Chhipra village near Shamuktala, died in a mudslide on Wednesday. Police said Radhika was buried under the mud while digging a ditch in a field.

Huts gutted

Islampur: Ten huts were gutted in a fire at Nakkati village near Chopra on Wednesday. Two fire tenders from Islampur doused the flames.

‘Rape’ arrest

Burdwan: A 29-year-old man was arrested from a village in Burdwan’s Memari on Tuesday night for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl of the area. Police said Sanjiv Shau had allegedly raped the girl several times in the past eight months promising to marry her. The girl became pregnant and underwent an abortion at the Memari rural hospital three days ago. The girl’s mother lodged a police complaint after Sanjiv refused to marry the girl. Sanjiv has been remanded in jail custody for two weeks.
