NBU poll report sought
Siliguri, Feb. 24: The chairperson of West Bengal Higher Education Council today sought an explanation from North Bengal University vice-chancellor on the alleged discrepancies in the student union election.
“They (students) have complained about certain discrepancies like a second year student contesting in a seat allotted to first year students, some departments being barred from participating in the polls and changes brought to the election process without the mandatory consent of the executive council,” chairperson of the council Sugata Marjit said. He said VC Arunabha Basumajumdar had been asked to inquire into the matter and submit a report.
Darjeeling: Kalpana Rai, 35, and her one-and-a-half-year- old daughter Angel died of suspected asphyxiation at their house in Dali on Thursday night. Police said Kalpana had kept a bhukari, a heating device that burns on coal, burning throughout the night and it generated a lot of smoke. Two other residents of the house were admitted to the Darjeeling district hospital when they fell ill after inhaling the smoke.
Cooch Behar: Samaresh Narayan Ghosh, the former head clerk of Dinhata municipality, was arrested on Friday for allegedly siphoning off funds from the civic body. Dinhata police said Ghosh was arrested after the municipality chairperson lodged a complaint on February 22. Ghosh had allegedly taken Rs 5,000 from a youth as rent of a community hall owned by the civic body. But he did not deposit the money with the municipality.
Islampur: Islampur Depot Raksha Committee confined the North Bengal State Transport Corporation’s Islampur depot in-charge Sajal Chakraborty to his office on Friday to demand the withdrawal of the transfer order of 62 staff members who were shifted to Siliguri. The protest started at 10am and was continuing well past dusk.
