1 killed, 5 hurt in accident
Jalpaiguri, Jan. 18: A 75-year-old woman was killed and five persons were injured when a truck smashed into a roadside barbershop after hitting a road divider at Maskalai on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri this morning.
The driver of the Jalpaiguri-bound truck lost control of the vehicle while trying to save a rickshaw on the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri highway. The truck hit the road divider and swerved to the other side of the highway. Radharani Goswami, who was standing on the roadside, died on the spot. Three other bystanders and two cleaners of the the vehicle were admitted to the Jalpaiguri district hospital with injuries. After the accident, a mob blocked the road for four hours demanding widening of the stretch and construction of pavement. The blockade was withdrawn after the PWD dismantled the road divider.
Siliguri: The junior national football tournament for the Dr BC Roy Trophy started at the Kanchenjungha Stadium here on Wednesday. Two matches were played on the first day. Meghalaya won a match against Maharashtra 2-0, while a game between and Bengal and Punjab ended without goals.
Kalimpong: The body of a 31-year-old youth was found near his house at RC Mintri Road here on Tuesday. Police suspect that Sonam Gyatso, alias Dollar, was murdered as his forehead and head bore marks of injuries caused by a sharp-edged weapon.
Siliguri: A resident of Nepal was arrested from Panitanki on Wednesday and a tiger skin was recovered from him. Naxalbari customs officials said Onchung Thakuri, 60, a resident of Lumbini in Nepal, was trying to smuggle the skin into the neighbouring country. “The estimated price of the skin is Rs 25 lakh in the international market. We have also recovered Rs 1.67 lakh and Nepali currency worth Rs 25, 000 from him,” said Jyotikumar Bubana, the assistant commissioner, Naxalbari customs division.
Siliguri: An extra sleeper coach will be added to the 12753/12754 NJP-Chennai Express this week, Northeast Frontier Railway said on Wednesday.
