Graft cuffs on officer

Dumka, Dec. 12: A child development project officer of Borio, Sahebganj, was arrested from her official residence today for misappropriating funds meant for anganwadi centres in the district.

Anita Kumari has not only been charged with embezzling Rs 8.42 lakh, but also with tampering of official documents and taking bribes as the child development project officer (CDPO) of Shikaripara block in Dumka. She had held additional charge as CDPO of Dumka’s Raneswar block from May 2005 to October 2006.

Separate FIRs were lodged against her in Shikaripara and Raneswar police stations on January 8 and January 31, 2007. She had been absconding since November 20, 2010.

According to the FIR lodged with Shikaripara police by then district programme officer Virendra Prasad, the CDPO had misappropriated funds meant for purchasing foodgrain and other items of daily use for different anganwadi centres.

The FIR at Raneswar police station, lodged by then CDPO Jaideep Tigga, alleged that she had taken bribes from applicants for the posts of sevikas and sahayikas at anganwadi centres and tampered with official documents to conceal the evidence of irregularities committed by her.

Sources said Anita Kumari allegedly enjoyed the patronage of tainted former minister Harinarayan Rai.

She was produced before the chief judicial magistrate here today and sent to Dumka Central Jail for 14 days. She has pleaded innocence.
