Landlord jailed for rape

A 43-year-old man, Santanu Biswas, was sentenced to eight years of rigorous imprisonment by the additional judicial magistrate of the third court of Barasat on Friday for raping a minor in 2007. Santanu is the owner of the Rajarhat house where the girl used to stay with her mother. Police said he had raped the girl after the family failed to pay the rent for two months.

Power supply: Power supply may get disrupted at the Chowbhaga, Tiljala, Sapgachi, Christopher Road, Huges Road, Dr Ambedkar Sarani and Park Circus connector areas between 10am and noon on Friday because of maintenance.

Accident: Prasanta Sau, 21, an employee of a private college in New Town, died after he slipped and fell off a bus near Narkelbagan and got crushed under its rear wheels on Thursday afternoon. Sau was taken to Bidhannagar hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Found dead: An unidentified youth in his mid-30s was found dead beside a bush at Jatragachhi in New Town on Thursday morning. Police said the body was covered with a plastic sheet and had injury marks on the neck.

Ships on display: Airavat, Karmuk and Kuthar, the three Visakhapatnam-based Indian Naval Ships (INS) of the Eastern Fleet, will be open to the public from 10am to 3pm on November 8 and 9 at the Kidderpore docks. The vessels, built by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd, will be exhibited as a prelude to the Navy Week celebrations.

Duo held: Two men Mahesh Singh and Mohammad Shahzada alias Jagga were arrested on Thursday for allegedly attacking a trader, Amit Singh, at his Bentinck Street office with a razor and snatching Rs 1 lakh on Monday.
