Two dead in accident

Two persons died and another was seriously injured after the motorcycle they were riding collided with an oil tanker on NH41 at Nimtouri, about 100km from Calcutta, around 4pm on Wednesday. oma Basak, 22, and her sister-in-law Rina Mondal, 36, both from the Bidhan Pally area in Lake Town, were riding pillion. The driver, a man in his 50s, has not been identified yet. The trio were on their way to Calcutta. oma and the man died on the spot. Rina was rushed to Tamluk District Hospital with serious head injury. They were not wearing helmets. olice used Soma’s cellphone to contact her husband Balai Basak. “He told us that Soma was a beautician and the two women had left home at 5am on Wednesday to pursue a job offer,” said Arun Khan, the officer-in-charge of Tamluk police station.

CU results

Calcutta University will publish the BA, BSc Part II (honours and general) results on November 4, said Dhrubojyoti Chatterjee, the pro-vice-chancellor (academic) of the university, on Wednesday. The examinations were held between June and July.

Teacher job

The cabinet on Thursday will take up a proposal for the creation of 164 additional teaching posts for the newly opened English-medium sections at the higher secondary level in government-aided schools, said an official in the education department.

Shot dead

Anirban Majumder, a 28-year-old journalist, was shot dead by unidentified men near a playground at Sodepur in North 24-Parganas on Wednesday evening. A resident of Nimta near Birati, Anirban was shot point-blank at the temple minutes after he stepped out of Sodepur railway station. Police sources said the assailants escaped on a motorcycle.


Rear admiral A.K. Verma has taken over as the chairman and managing director of the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited on November 1. Verma succeeds rear admiral K.C. Sekhar.
