Father hurts children

Balurghat, Oct.11: Two children were injured when their father attacked them with a knife in a drunken state at Champaguri near Tapan today.

Lahan Pahan, a farmer, had a spat with his wife Deepali today. When Deepali tried to leave the house with her daughters, Sunati, 7, and one-year-old Susmita, Lahan suddenly attacked the children with a knife. Both the girls have been admitted to the Balurghat district hospital with injuries. Police said Lahan, who was drunk when he attacked the girls, is absconding.

Betel nut haul

Siliguri: Naxalbari police seized four quintals of betel nut from Dayaramjote on Monday night. The police said the betel nuts were from Nepal and smugglers were trying to cross the border and enter India with the loot when the police chased them. The smugglers left nuts and fled.


Balurghat: A woman was robbed of Rs 8,000 near a market here on Tuesday. Police said Mamoni Burman, a resident of Dongi, had gone to the Balurghat market to shop when two youths snatched the bag in which the money was and fled the spot. One person has been arrested.


Islampur: Biswanath Murmu allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at his home at Kalagach near Chopra on Monday night. Police said Biswanath was suffering from depression.

Three held

Jorhat: Two surrendered Ulfa militants, Pranab Saikia and Dipak Rajkhowa, were apprehended from a medical shop at Dergaon in Golaghat district on Tuesday when the duo had allegedly come to extort money from the shop owner in the name of Ulfa. Later, another person, Biju Bora, was arrested for his involvement in the incident.

Drug seized

Silchar: The BSF has seized around 13,000 bottles of a cough syrup, Phensedyl, also used as a narcotic drug, worth Rs 10lakh from Basatapur village in south Assam. One person has been arrested.
