Bhubaneswar, Aug. 23: Music and dance came together at a concert held by the Bhubaneswar Music Circle at Rabindra Mandap on Sunday. The event was dedicated to legendary Odissi dancer Sanjukta Panigrahi.

The evening began with a musical rendition by Pritiprakash Mohapatra who started off with timeless compositions of celebrated musician Balakrushna Dash such as Nayani Sunayanare dela ki nisha bharire. It was followed by a few classic melodies by Raghunath Panigrahi. The audience appreciated Mohapatra’s recital with applauses.

A mesmerising repertoire of Kathak by Molly Roy from Bengal followed the musical session. Roy, a disciple of the doyen of classical dance form, Pandit Birju Maharaj, first showcased a special choreography dedicated to Lord Krishna on the occasion of Janmashtami. The sequence depicted the mischievous childhood of the cowherd boy as Molly transformed into the damsels of Brindavan as well as Lord Krishna.

She then performed a Gat Nikas wherein she presented aesthetically poised gaits and portrayed abstract scenes with intricate steps. Molly concluded her recital with an item dedicated to the monsoon.

“It was an honour to perform in the state of legendary dancers,” said Molly.

“We are delighted that despite chances of rain, many music lovers assembled for the event,” said Mahendra Mishra, general secretary of Bhubaneswar Music Circle.
