Seven trains cancelled

Siliguri, June 28: The Northeast Frontier Railway today cancelled seven trains from June 30 till further notice because of security threat in certain parts of the Northeast.

The trains are 55810/55809 Guwahati-New Bongaigaon Passenger, 55753/55754 Alipurduar Junction-Guwahati Passenger, 15717/15718 Guwahati-Mariani Intercity Express, 15769/15770 Alipurduar Junction-Lumding Intercity Express, 15771/15772 Alipurduar Junction-Kamakhya Intercity Express and the passenger specials on Rangiya-Rangapara and Rangapara-Murkongselek routes.

Cannabis haul

Siliguri: The directorate of revenue intelligence seized 367kg of cannabis from a truck near Siliguri on Tuesday morning and arrested the driver and cleaner. DRI officials said the estimated price of the narcotics was Rs 1.16 crore. The contraband was loaded at Numaligarh in Assam and was being transported to Berhampur in Murshidabad when the seizure was made. The cannabis was kept in182 packets hidden under household articles in the truck.

Threat letter

Malda: Biswanath Sukul, the chairperson of Old Malda municipality, received a threat letter on Monday, saying he would face dire consequences if he did not take steps to remove a market from Nawabganj in town. Sukul lodged a complaint with Old Malda police station on Tuesday. Kalyan Mukherjee, the additional superintendent of police, Malda, said an investigation had started.

IAF event

Siliguri: The Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik, will be present on the first day of the station commander conference to be held in 20 Wing Air Force Station at Bagdogra on Wednesday. Station commanders of all air force stations under the Eastern Air Command will meet to discuss a host of administrative and operational issues. Senior officials from the Air Headquarters in New Delhi will also be present at the two-day event.
