Flight stuck on runway

An IndiGo flight from Guwahati blocked Calcutta airport’s main runway for 18 minutes on Monday afternoon after it got stuck because of a snag. The plane with 85 passengers landed on the main runway at 2.14pm. The aircraft’s nose wheel developed a snag and it could not move, airport officials said. The aircraft had to be towed out of the runway. Officials said the take-off and landing of eight flights had been delayed.

CU dean complaint

The dean of Calcutta University’s law department lodged a complaint with chief minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that a teacher of the department had been promoted from the post of reader to professor in violation of the University Grants Commission rules.

Bomb scare

An unclaimed box found under a seat in a general compartment of the Howrah-Gandhidham Garbha Express sparked a bomb scare at Howrah station around 12.45pm on Monday. Officers of the bomb disposal squad found a digital camera inside the box and handed it over to the Government Railway Police.


A 15-year-old rag picker was injured after a crude bomb burst outside a shop at Suryanagar in Jadavpur on Monday afternoon.


A 26-year-old girl was injured after falling off a two-wheeler on JL Nehru Road, near the Park Street crossing, on Monday morning. Police said the girl, who was wearing a helmet, lost control of the Scooty when its rear wheel got punctured. She has been admitted to CMRI Hospital.


Advocate Joymalya Bagchi has been appointed judge of Calcutta High Court. The high court chief justice, J.N. Patel, on Monday administered the oath of office to Bagchi.


Namita Guha, a 65-year-old homemaker, died after a bus mowed her down in front of Behala Siddeswari Kalibari on Monday afternoon. She was declared dead at Vidyasagar Hospital.

Constable Pijush Ghosh, who had killed a woman, her husband and her sister-in-law on June 19, was produced in the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate in Barrackpore on Monday and remanded in judicial custody.


Two youths were injured after they were electrocuted when they went inside a transformer room in Bally to pick up unused copper wires on Monday afternoon.

Three held

Three members of a gang of six were arrested on Monday when they tried to flee after looting Rs 60,000 from a petrol pump in Naihati, on the northern fringes. Residents chased and nabbed the trio, said cops.
