Crane hit kills rail worker

Malda, May 2: A 50-year-old railway pointsman was killed when he was hit by a crane near Harishchandrapur station this morning.

District police chief Bhuban Mondal said the railway tracks near the station were being repaired and four mobile cranes were being used to remove stones. Joydeb Dey was operating one of the cranes when another one hit him on the head from behind. Sources in the Northeast Frontier Railway’s Katihar division said an inquiry has been started.

Boy dead

Alipurduar: Bibek Lama, 13, was killed after he fell off from the bicycle he was riding in front of a tractor at Jai Birpara Tea Estate on Monday. Police said the tractor went over the teenager and he died on the spot. The body has been sent for a post-mortem.

Trio arrested

Siliguri: Three youths involved in a number of snatching cases on Sevoke Road and New Jalpaiguri for almost a year were arrested from Bagdogra and Damdim on Monday. Bhaktinagar police said Dharmendra Paswan, Ajit Singha and Prabir Singha were part of a racket that used to rob women who came out of jewellery shops or ATM booths. The police got the lead on the trio from Amit Pal, also a gang member, who had been picked up last month.

Teen suicides

Balurghat: A teenaged boy and a girl hanged themselves at Shibpur on Monday. Police said Amit Roy, 17, and Neelima Kachhua, 16, both residents of Mahanaj village near Tapan, allegedly had an affair. They came to know that their parents were against the relationship and hung themselves from a tree.

Syrup haul

Alipurduar: Three persons, including two from Bhutan, were arrested and 65 bottles of cough syrup was seized from them on Sunday. Police said Bhutan resident Tikaram Gurung and his wife Sukhmaya and Bhabesh Sarkar, a local shop owner, were picked up from Madarihat. Several sedatives were also recovered from the trio.
