US cooperation in education

Bhubaneswar: With an aim to provide collaborations in the fields of education and sustainable technologies, the mayor of Cupertino, USA, Gilbert Wong and mayor Ananta Narayan Jena of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday signed a letter of intent on sister-city relationships between the two cities. The agreement will cover collaborations in areas like vocational education, healthcare, science. It will also focus on cultural, business and commercial endeavours. “The cooperation between the two cities will also include use of technology for efficient use of energy in future,” said Wong.

Vigilance raid

Cuttack: Carrying out investigation into an allegation of disproportionate assets case, vigilance sleuths on Wednesday conducted simultaneous raids on the offices and residences of Abhimanyu Kar, a senior clerk at the office of the deputy secretary at the Board of secondary education, Sambalpur.

Four teams of the anti-corruption wing raided two houses of Kar located at Kalyaninagar and Gopalpur in Cuttack. Similarly, paternal house of Kar at Pattamundai in Kendrapada district was also searched. Movable and immovable assets including documents have been recovered from these places and further investigation is going on, said vigilance sources.

Poachers held

Bhubaneswar: Three poachers were arrested from Arjunapalli forest on Wednesday while they were on their way for hunting. A country-made gun was seized from their possession.

Drugs raid

Bhubaneswar: To keep a tab on unauthorised sale of drugs, a surveillance wing of state drugs control department on Wednesday conducted surprise checks on a number of unauthorised medicine shops in the port town. The verification report would be submitted to the state drugs controller. The drugs controller is the competent authority to take legal action against such offenders under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, said an official.

Rare honour

Bhubaneswar: Renowned Oriya litterateur Sitakant Mohapatra has been conferred with the Sahitya Bharati Samman for 2011. The award, instituted by the Gangadhar Foundation, carried a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, and a silver replica of the Konark Sun Temple.

New train

Bhubaneswar: The East Coast Railway will on Thursday introduce the Bhubaneswar-Pune weekly super fast express. Rajya Sabha member Pyarimohan Mohapatra and Loksabha member Prasanna Kumar Patasani will flag off the train at Bhubaneswar railway station on Thursday.
