Eye spy

She can kill with a smile, She can wound with her eyes..Billy Joel was so right. Playful or passionate, fiery or dreamy, innocent or intriguing, these starry eyes do just that — and much more — to us

tere naina (My NAME IS KHAN)

Eyes have been eulogised in many a Bolly song, but this Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy romantic number is special for the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol chemistry and Javed Akhtar’s soulful lyrics.

Rab ki nemat hai teri nigaahein/ Jisme basti hai uski duayein/ Aise naino ki baaton mein koi kyun na aaye...

Kajrare, kajrare tere kaare kaare naina. Nightclub to marriage reception, the song that became an anthem. The Bachchan

baap-beta jammed like never before and soon-to-be-Bachchan Ash sizzled like never before. Gulzar’s part fun, part sensuous lyrics — Aankhein bhi kamaal karti hain/ personal se sawaal karti hain — made Kajrare a superhit.

naina thag lenge(OMKARA)

Beedi jalaile and Namak issak ka may have been the chart toppers, but it is this Rahat Fateh Ali Khan song that turned out to be the real gem of this Othello-inspired Vishal Bhardwaj film. Gulzar’s lyrics — Nainon ki mat maaniyo re/ nainon ki mat suniyo.../ Jaagte jaadu phukenge re neenden banjar kar denge — celebrated the mystery and the magic behind a woman’s eyes. Kareena’s limpid look sure helped.

jab se tere naina (SAAWARIYA)

This one ranks among the top Bolly romantic numbers in recent years. Ranbir Kapoor’s (towel) dance with abandon as he celebrates falling in love was sung from the heart by Shaan. The film flopped, the song became a rage.

sapno se bhare naina (LUCK BY CHANCE)

Sapno se bhare naina/ Naa neend hai naa chaina. This Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy song beautifully captures the restlessness of the eyes that dream of a better tomorrow. Javed Akhtar’s pen wove magic with Shankar Mahadevan lending his voice to the song. The fact that it was picturised on Farhan Akhtar was a big bonus.

tujhe bhula diya(ANJAANA ANJAANI)

The opening lines — Naina lageeyan baarishan/ Te sukke sukke sapne vi pijj gaye —lift this Anjaana Anjaani song from a good romantic number into a great song that celebrates love and longing, hope and heartbreak. Add to that a yummy Priyanka Chopra and a yummier Ranbir Kapoor!

yeh kaali kaali aankhen(BAAZIGAR)

The Baazigar song became a staple on every Bolly buff’s lips. Shot in a nightclub, Shah Rukh and Kajol lent fun and fervour to Yeh kaali kaali aankhen. Anu Malik almost spoilt the party with an unnecessary rap interlude (yes, in his voice). Almost.

pehli nazar mein (RACE)

Pehli nazar mein/ Kaisa jaadu kar diya/ Tera ban baitha hai mera jiya. Atif Aslam’s liquid voice and Sameer’s soulful lyrics helped this Race number race to the top of the charts — and remain there for weeks. For anyone wooing a loved one, Pehli nazar was the go-to song (despite Akshaye Khanna’s wig and facial gymnastics).

jaadu teri nazar (DARR)

Jaadu teri nazar/ Khushboo tera badan. The pristine hills of Switzerland came alive in this

Shiv-Hari composition picturised on a breathtakingly beautiful Juhi Chawla. Jaadu teri nazar is among those evergreen Bolly romantic numbers.

tere mast mast do nain

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice, Salman Khan’s irrepressible charm and Sonakshi Sinha’s smouldering eyes spelt magic for this Sajid-Wajid number. Taakte rehte tujhko saanjh savere/ Nainon mein basiyan jaise nain yeh tere.... Can it get more romantic than that?

amitabh bachchan in RGV ki AAG and satte pe satta

Bachchan’s Babban Singh (above) in Ram Gopal Varma’s Sholay rehash had different coloured eyes — the right one blue, the left one brown! In Satte Pe Satta, the Big B had a double role. What set happy-go-lucky Ravi apart from serial killer Babu? Grey contact lenses.

shah rukh khan in baazigar

The Abbas-Mustan thriller had Shah Rukh Khan playing the dual personalities of Ajay and Vicky. While Ajay had grey eyes, Vicky wore brown contact lenses to hide his identity. Remember the

nail-biting scene in which Vicky retrieves his contact lenses from the wash basin in the nick of time?

rekha in khoon bhari maang

The wronged wife metamorphoses into a seductive game player in this Rakesh Roshan thriller. How did Rekha’s plain Jane Aarti become Jyoti the femme fatale? With plastic surgery, loads of oomph... and grey contact lenses!

sridevi in nagina

How do you show a human turning into a snake? By changing the colour of the eyes, silly. That’s what Sridevi did in this Harmesh Malhotra film. Sorry Mallika Sherawat, you don’t even come close...Eessssssh!

The Superman Returns actress has a blue left eye and a brown right eye. By nature.

christopher walken

A victim of Heterochromia Iridium, the Sleepy Hollow actor has different coloured eyes — one blue and one hazel.

1 Begin with a thorough CTM (clean, tone, moisturise). Start with a concealer since it evens out the skin tone while acting as an eyeshadow base. Blend well and dust with powder. Your eye as canvas is now ready

2 Cover the eyelid with rough random strokes of any dark green eye pencil

3 Go over the area with a blending brush tipped with shimmery green shadow. Blend towards the brow bone with strokes that go up and out covering the entire lid area. The colour should not touch the brow bone but only go towards it with fading intensity. The colour near the lash line should be the darkest

4 With a darker matte green, go over the ends of the eye for that 2D look. Blend some on the crease line but don’t go all over the eyelid

5 Run a clean blending brush to smoothen the area

6 With a black gel liner, line the inner rim of your top eyelid

7 With the same liner, draw a kohl-like line on your lower lid

8Go over this line with the same green eye pencil

9 Top with the dark green matte eye shadow to seal the deal

10 Finish off with two coats of voluminous mascara

she’s got the look: lush lashes to lust for

Want thick, fanned-out lashes to flutter and kill? Try extensions, instead of weighing down your eyelashes with several coats of mascara. A popular item on the beauty block, the semi-permanent eyelash extensions blend in smoothly with natural lashes to add volume and length.

“Those with scanty lashes can definitely go for these extensions or you can wear them for show. The extensions are very comfortable to carry and don’t damage your natural lashes. They give a sensual, wide-eyed look without looking false,” says beauty expert Bridgette Jones.

Using a tweezer, the silicon extensions are first dipped in a specially formulated bonding glue and then fixed in the gaps between your real eyelashes. The extensions last up to eight weeks if maintained well. “Once the lashes start drooping, you must visit the parlour to get them re-touched. And you must not apply mascara on the extensions,” cautions Bridgette. Other precautions for the first 24-hours of applying the extensions include no water contact and no rubbing of eyes.

The extensions come in various lengths to suit the shape of your eye, so it’s important to know what to pick. If you have big, round eyes, a combination of medium-length lashes at the front and long ones towards the corners will do the job. Those with almond-shaped eyes could go for the same length throughout. For deep-set eyes, long lashes are recommended for extra length and visibility. “Always keep the longer ones towards the corners for that dramatic winged effect,” advises Bridgette.

There’s room for experimentation with the lash colour too. If you are the adventurous type, you might want to kick the regular black and brown, and go for green, purple or violet!

Five tips on removing eye make-up

  • Always opt for a light, non-greasy
  • eye make-up remover that dissolves
  • easily without dragging the skin.
  • A special oil-based remover should be used to remove waterproof mascara.
  • To remove make-up from the lids and brow, dab the tip of your ring finger on the remover and then move it in small circular motions to spread it in the region.
  • With a wet cotton wool pad, gently wipe the remover from the lids and brow, working from the inner to the outer corner of the eye.
  • For the corners and lower lash line, use a cotton wool bud dipped in the remover. Finally, pat the area lightly with a dry cotton pad for total cleansing.
