Kid saves sister on tracks

Raiganj, May 4: A 13-year-old boy, who saved his elder sister from getting hit by an approaching train here suffered severe injuries this afternoon.

Bishu Sarkar had a quarrel with his elder sister Kasti, a resident of Subhasganj. Suddenly 16-year-old Kasti started running along the railway tracks. The approaching Radhikapur-Katihar passenger was about to hit the girl when Bishu pushed her from behind. Though Kasti escaped with minor bruises, Bishu suffered severe head injuries and had to be admitted to the district hospital in a critical condition. The siblings used to stay with their uncle.


Islampur: Five employees of Bihar Gramin Bank were robbed of Rs 12 lakh by four armed men at Bansbari near Putia on Tuesday. The officials were on their way to deliver the money from the bank’s district headquarters at Kishanganj to the branch office in Putia when the men on motorcycles accosted them.

NBU polls

Siliguri: The Students’ Forum formed the union at the law department of NBU on Tuesday. The Forum has secured nine of 17 seats at the elections conducted on April 5. SFI has won the remaining eight seats.

Traders hurt

Malda: Ajit Malakar and Ashis Das were injured when a gang of five fired at one of them and stabbed the other with a broken bottle at Baharal near Ratua on Tuesday. The businessman were coming towards Malda from Gobraghat on a motorcycle when five armed men stopped them and asked for money. When the duo said they had no cash, the gang members stabbed Das in the stomach with the broken bottle while another fired at Malakar. They were taken to the rural hospital at Ratua from where they were referred to the district hospital. Malakar has been shifted to a hospital in Calcutta.


Islampur: Samit Kumar, a student of Purnea Polytechnic College, was abducted on Monday. Samit’s father Aswin Kumar has lodged a complaint at Purnea police station.
