Ranchi, April 17: Engineering major Larsen & Toubro has evinced interest to set up a thermal power plant in Jharkhand, deputy chief minister Raghubar Das said here today.
“The vice-president of the company met me on Thursday and proposed setting up a 4,000MW power plant in Deoghar or Dumka. I have asked the secretary of the state energy department to write to the Centre,” Das said.
Principal secretary (energy) N.N. Pandey today wrote to the Union power secretary and requested him to provide a 4,000MW ultra mega power plant (UMPP) in Deoghar. He argued that land, power and coal were easily available in Deoghar. Pandey said Jharkhand now had only one UMPP in Tilaiya.
About L&T’s proposed initiatives, Pandey said the company was yet to submit a report, but the state was ready to extend all possible help.
When asked about the memorandum of understandings signed in the past with some private power sectors, Das said the state was more interested to work with a couple of big industries which could help it meet its power requirement in the coming years.
