Malda huts razed

Malda, April 5: About 200 huts were razed to the ground in a fire at Rajnagar in Malda this afternoon.

The pradhan of Binnagar panchayat, Sukurdi Sheikh, said the fire had started in the hut of Chhedu Mondol and soon spread to other dwellings. He added that a strong breeze blowing in the area and haystacks kept outside the dwellings helped the flames spread fast. Four fire engines, two each from Malda and the NTPC plant at Farakka, doused the blaze. As there was no water sources in the village to refill the fire tankers, the local people broke the pipes supplying arsenic-free water to douse the flames.
