Life term for murder

Chittaranjan Pollay and Ramesh Majumdar, in their late-30s, were awarded life terms by an Alipore court on Friday for murdering dentist Surya Chakrabarty at his clinic in his Beniapukur house in 2001. The two, who worked as Chakrabarty’s assistants, had stolen Rs 10,000 from the clinic.

Pantry manager held: Animesh Yadav, the 41-year-old pantry car manager of the Ernakulam-Guwahati Express on which more than 25 city students had fallen ill on Wednesday, was arrested late on Thursday for dereliction of duty. He was granted interim bail.

Maidan Book Fair: Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya described the Maidan as “the ideal venue” for the Book Fair at a programme organised at the upcoming book mall on College Street on Friday. The pollution caused by the Book Fair on the Maidan was “manageable”, he added.

Rape arrest: S.N.M. Abdi, a journalist in his 50s, was arrested in his New Alipore flat on Thursday night for allegedly raping a 27-year-old woman.

Body found: The body of 30-year-old Rina Roy was found in a room of an EM Bypass hotel, near Peerless Hospital on Friday. The hotel owner alerted police after a foul smell emanating from the locked room. Roy had checked in with a man.

Mishap: Noor Islam, 34, died and Syed Abedullah, 32, was injured when the bike they were on was hit by a car on the EM Bypass, in Topsia, on Friday.
