Darjeeling, May 29: Pranay Rai has decided to contribute Rs 40 lakh from the MP’s Local Area Development Fund for restoration of infrastructure in the hills following Tuesday’s landslides.
“I have decided to grant Rs 40 lakh and will hand over the money to the district administration in several instalments. I will give my consent to whatever work the administration proposes as it has a clear picture about the damage,” said Rai, the Darjeeling MLA.
The MLA said he did not want to get directly involved with any particular project and will only review the progress of work.
A member of Assembly receives Rs 40 lakh a year and he can spend the amount to carry out development work in his constituency. Rai has decided to use this year’s funds solely for landslide-related repairs.
A group of people from Sikkim’s Gangtok, under the banner of Friends for Darjeeling, has started collecting money to help cyclone victims in the hills. They have already sent a truckload of relief material.
“After the landslides, we immediately mobilised our friends and collected Rs 35,000 in a single day,” said Manish Shrestha.
