Two killed in car crash

Gangtok, Oct. 22: Two youths died and four were injured when the Maruti WagonR they were travelling in fell 400 feet below near Sagbari in West Sikkim at 4am today.

All six were on their way to Sagbari for a football practice. The deceased are Bikash Rai (20) and Anup Subba (19). The injured have been admitted to Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial Hospital here. Police said the car was owned by a contractor, B.B. Rai, and it was being driven by Bikash at the time of the mishap.


Darjeeling: The court of the chief judicial magistrate here on Wednesday directed the forest department to return the passport and cameras of Petr Svacha, the Czech entomologist who was let off with a fine in a poaching case, by 29 October.

Cop in soup

Siliguri: Siliguri police on Wednesday registered a case against B. Poddar, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the District Intelligence Branch, under Section 306 of IPC for abetting suicide. Md Nawab Ghulam Rabbani of Chappalpatty here had lodged a complaint against the ASI, accusing him of threatening his brother Md Samsul Zaman (35) who had killed himself.

Body found

Siliguri: Mithu Das (30), a resident of Lakhimpur in Assam, was on Tuesday night found dead in a hotel he had checked into. When he did not respond to calls, the hotel staff broke open the door and found him hanging from the ceiling of his room.

Youth held

Jaigaon: Umesh Gurung (22), who allegedly consumed poison in front of the police station here on Monday after the law enforcers had refused to let a girl he claimed to have married go with him, was arrested on Wednesday. He was taken into custody upon his discharge from the Alipurduar subdivisional hospital where he had been admitted. Umesh was charged with abducting the minor girl following a complaint lodged by her father. He was remanded in jail custody till November 5.
