Elephant kills man

Alipurduar, Oct. 8: A tusker came back from a forest last night to trample a man who had chased it away with friends minutes before.

The animal entered Bhutia Basti under Buxa Tiger Reserve around 10pm. Rajesh Chhetry, Thule Chhetry and Sanju Chhetry lighted torches and scared the elephant away. Rajesh, 30, was killed when he was returning home later. His friends escaped. The villagers demanded an electrified fence and searchlights to prevent elephant raids.

Road deaths

Calcutta: Three people were killed in separate road accidents in the city on Wednesday. Shipra Chatterjee, 40, a resident of the New Market area, was run over by a bus at Dorina Crossing near Esplanade. Police accused her of jaywalking. Sanjay Roy, 20, of Burrabazar was hit by a taxi on MG Road. A man aged 20 was killed after he fell off his motorcycle and got run over by a bus on BT Road.

Siblings drown

Howrah: Two brothers playing outside their house in Howrah’s Uluberia drowned in a pond on Wednesday. The mother realised Anupam Naskar, 7, and Ujjal, 5, were missing when she called them for lunch.
