2 killed, 35 hurt in mishap

Islampur, Sept. 29: Two passengers were killed and 35 injured when a private bus they were travelling in hit a tree beside NH34 in Karandighi’s Khikirtola, about 70km from here, tonight.

Police said the driver lost control of the bus on the Siliguri-Raiganj route when he had tried to avoid another tree that had fallen on the highway. The injured were taken to the Raiganj district and Karandighi block hospitals. Traffic was blocked for two hours.

Road race

Siliguri: Bablu Ghosh of the SSB, Ranidanga has won the All India Invitation 15km Road race organised by Baghajatin Athletics Club here on Monday. Sunny Oraon of Siliguri has won the 4km Fraternity Run. Ghosh and Oraon received Rs 15,000 (sponsored by the Anandabazar Patrika) and Rs 3,000 respectively as prize money. Olympian Sushmita Singha Roy flagged off the race and gave away the prizes.

Boy dies

Malda: A four-year-old boy was killed in an accident on NH34 on Monday. Nayeemuddin Sheikh died when a private bus hit the motorcycle he was riding with his parents in Baishnabnagar of Malda. Police said the family was on their way to Malda to shop for Ramazan.

Nuts haul

Siliguri: The department of revenue intelligence (DRI) recovered 300 sacks of contraband betel nuts from Platform No. 1 at New Jalpaiguri station on Monday. DRI officials said the consignment worth Rs 10 lakh was supposed to be loaded into trains bound for Patna, Varanasi and Mughalsarai but did not have valid documents.

Lottery ban

Malda: The district administration on Monday banned roadside lottery stalls. District magistrate Chittaranjan Das said people were often cheated in lotteries which had cars, motorcycles and electronics goods as prizes.

Couple death

Cooch Behar: A couple committed suicide in Kotwali’s Charpanishala on Monday. Kasem Ali (34) and Ruhina Bibi (26) consumed pesticide following a family feud. They have a son and two daughters.
