HNLC denies murder charge

Shillong: The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council on Sunday denied its involvement in the kidnapping and killing of KSU president Phershal Kongwang. In a statement issued here, HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said it was a gameplan of police and surrendered militants to make the organisation a scapegoat in the incident.

According to the militant outfit, some frustrated police officials along with the surrendered HNLC militants are involved in weakening the foundation of the organisation.

Human chain

Dibrugarh: The Sivasagar and Dibrugarh district units of the AASU will form a human chain on Wednesday in Moran in protest against the government’s alleged failure in punishing the killers of Dulen Baruah. The chain will be formed from 11am for two hours.

Tortoise rescued

Sivasagar: Nature lovers rescued a tortoise from a trader at Nitaipukhuri in Sivasagar district on Sunday. Forest officials later released it in a local waterbody.

Robbery foiled

Silchar: Assam and Mizoram police on Saturday night foiled an attempt by bandits to commit a robbery at Lailapur on the Assam-Mizoram border in Cachar district on NH 54.


Guwahati: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will formally unveil the NEC’s Vision 2020 document in New Delhi on July 2. he document was prepared after consultations with over 50,000 people across the region. It took three years for the council to give shape to the document.
