Engineer killed in Phek
- Nagaland SDO dragged out of car and shot dead

Kohima, March 25: Gunmen today shot dead an engineer employed in a government-run cement plant in Phek district.

Phek police said around eight armed men stopped the car in which Roland Sangtam, sub-divisional officer in the geology and mining department of Wazeho cement plant was travelling and shot him dead from point-blank range.

Sangtam was travelling along with his driver and another person when the incident occurred at 4.30am near Chizami. He was bound for Kohima, a distance of 350km from the plant.

The driver and his companion brought Sangtam’s body to Pfutsero police station. The police from Pfutsero and Phek towns rushed to the spot after hearing of the incident and combed the area for the gunmen. A police officer said all efforts are being made to arrest the killers.

Though the police suspect militants of a certain Naga underground group, the Phek district administration did not want to jump to any conclusion because the driver and the third person are still being questioned.

“We are trying to gather all information from every angle. Therefore, we cannot say who committed the crime,” a senior police official said from Phek. Sub-divisional police officers of Pfutsero and Phek are leading the operations to track down the killers. Sangtam’s body was handed over to his relatives.

The stretch where Sangtam was gunned down was recently declared National Highway 155. Phek district is home to various Naga outfits like the NSCN (I-M), NSCN (K) and Naga National Council factions.
