Mumbai, Dec. 24: Narendra Modis Internet blitz to court voters may have been a smart move in an increasingly young country. Today, young Indian Net users crowed at his triumph, with much of the content overtly communal.
Narendra Modi has done good work for Gujarat but we are supporting him because we love his Hindutva campaign. The Congress favours Muslims. That is why all young people here hate it, wrote Jiten Patel, a commerce graduate.
Mr Narendra Modi is (a) man of commitment, in him the nation can see Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the iron man of India. Today India needs the very strong combinations of Mr Modi at national level, wrote Suprabha Das from Orissa.
Some anti-Modi messages were posted, too, but they were crowded out.
Around September-October, the BJPs infotech cell had posted a wide range of downloadable material on Modi on websites like YouTube. Fan sites were created and several fan clubs formed on social networking site Orkut.
Young bloggers today applauded Modi for his response to Sonia Gandhis maut ke saudagar (merchants of death) speech — a response that has brought the chief minister a poll panel rap and an apex court contempt notice.
What a man — you sometimes are scared of him, but you cant help but love him. I really love him. He is a messiah for Gujaratis all over the world, wrote university student Darshan Patel.
Modis victory is a slap in the face for all those so-called seculars. They do not want Hindus to unite as Hindu, but are out to disunite them into various caste groups. If this can be repeated in a couple of states, appeasement of minorities will be a thing of the past, wrote college student Mahesh Naik, 23, on Orkut.
Psychiatrists said the anonymity and distance the Net offers often encourages users to express strident opinions they are too embarrassed or afraid to voice in their peer groups. Anonymity helps you assume a different identity and abuse people, Mumbai psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty said.
Among the few anti-Modi voices was one blogger who wrote: Adolf Hitler was a wonderful orator. People who voted for him… believed he would develop Germany very well….
