Boy identifies father as killer

Malda, Sept. 2: An eight-year-old boy identified his father as the murderer of his maternal uncle in the railway colony here today. Chinmay Basu was arrested on the basis of his sonís statement.

Prasad Pradhan, the inspector-in-charge of Englishbazar police station, said the boy had seen Chinmay, a railway employee, throttle Kamal Das, 40, to death early this morning. Last night, Chinmay had allegedly laced Kamalís dinner with sedatives.

The police learnt during an inquiry that Chinmay had a strained relationship with his wife Neela, a matron at the railway hospital. Neighbours alleged that the accused often beat up his wife.

Neela, who was on duty at the hospital last night, had asked her brother, a resident of Chandannagore, to come to her rescue. Kamal came to Malda on August 27. He had reportedly threatened his brother-in-law that he would drag him to court if the torture on his sister did not end.

Kamalís body was discovered by Neela after she came back from the hospital in the morning. By that time, Chinmay had got himself admitted to the railway hospital complaining of uneasiness in the chest. He was picked up from there.
