Steel land

Calcutta, July 25: Industries minister Nirupam Sen today told the Assembly that the government would lease out land to the Jai Balaji group for its proposed integrated steel, cement and captive power plants in Purulia’s Raghunathpur.

He said 4,000 acres would be required for the Rs 16,000-crore project, and a portion of the land could be bought directly from farmers.

Elephants

Siliguri: An elephant calf was run over by an express train in the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary on Wednesday. In Sonakhali near Alipurduar, a tusker turned killer when it trampled a woman sleeping in her hut. She died on the spot.
