Fest ends with social message

Feb. 4: Alcheringa 2007, the annual festival of IIT Guwahati, today concluded with a resolution to find ways of eradicating AIDS.

The concluding day of the festival was marked by events that dealt with social issues.

Rohit Shankar, media co-ordinator of the event, said Alcheringa is not merely a festival of fun but also a platform to spread social awareness.

“Along with the rest of the world, India also faces the grave threat of AIDS. Besides putting up banners and distributing leaflets on AIDS awareness on and around the IIT campus in north Guwahati, we had organised a creative writing competition on how to eradicate AIDS from the country, particularly from the Northeast,” Shankar said. He added that IIT Guwahati has joined hands with the Assam State AIDS Control Society for the campaign.

Nearly 20 colleges from throughout the country participated in the events. This year, the students celebrated the eleventh edition of the festival. The development commission (handicrafts) also held a mega exhibition showcasing handicrafts of the Northeast.

Pop icon Remo Fernandes is sheduled to perform later tonight during Crescendo, the cultural event. But rain could mar the live concert as it is an open-air show.
