Opposition heat spurs police probe

Guwahati, March 11: City police investigating the disappearance of state public works department's national highway division's chief engineer Suren Das suspect he was abducted over disputes related to contracts.

Das, who hails from Jorhat and was staying at Nizarapar in Chandmari, went missing on Thursday. Investigations have intensified following the intervention of Dispur, which apprehends that the Opposition might rake up the issue.

The only clue the police have so far is that some persons had come to his rented accommodation in a Maruti Alto car on Thursday night. This information came from Das's landlord. 'We suspect that he may have been abducted due to some dispute regarding allotment of contracts,' a police official said.
