CPM duo gets life

Calcutta, Aug. 31: CPM leaders Abdus Sattar Molla and Imran Naskar have been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering Congress activist Yusuf Molla in 1995 at Netagolampur in Bhangar in South 24-Parganas.

The verdict was delivered today by the Alipore additional district and sessions judge, Manojit Kumar Mondal.

Sattar is a member of the CPMís South 24-Parganas district committee and Naskar a former sabhapati of the Bhangar panchayat samity.

Bloc leader

Berhampur: District president of Forward Bloc Sampad Das was killed after a group of men fired at him from close range at Khagra, about 200 km from Calcutta, on Wednesday. His wife and son were with him when the incident occurred ' the three were returning home on a motorcycle ' but they were unhurt. The Left Front has called a 12-hour bandh in Murshidabad on Thursday to protest the killing.

Lecturer slur

Rampurhat: A part-time lecturer of Rampurhat College has been accused of burning his wife alive. Police launched a search for 42-year-old Seikh Kalimuddin after his in-laws lodged a complaint. Kalimuddin, a commerce teacher in Rampurhat College, had married his student Dilruba Sultana in December this year against her familyís wishes.


Behrampore: Two persons, including a four-year-old girl, have died of diarrhoea in the last two days and 57 others were affected in Kaliadanga village, 240 km from Calcutta.
