The uniform in society

“Hello handsome!” we greeted Indrani Halder, looking sexily stern in khaki. Boy, was she pleased with that. “I like that!” she grinned widely. “Means, I’m looking fit for the role'” The story’s about “the clash of two do-gooders,” explained Indrani, while strutting her stuff, police uniform and pistol included, in the real-life Panditya Basti, near Rashbehari Avenue. She was talking about Tomosarekha, the story of Ratri Mukherjee (Indrani) and Diba Sen (Aparajita Adhya), “both of whom are young, brave and enthusiastic women speaking up against atrocities, corruption and the degradation in the system.” Indrani plays the hard-nut cop and Aparajita the aggressive advocate. “Both are on the same path,” added a trimmed-down Aparajita, “but because of the system, end up clashing against each other.” Somewhere in between, the common man continues to get victimised in everyday life.

Also in the cast of this new daily soap, Tomosarekha, which kicks off on August 15, are Arun Banerjee, Chitra Sen, Anusree Das, Badsha Moitra, Shantilal Mukherjee, Chaitali Dasgupta, Alokananda Roy and others. Arghyakamal Mitra, one of the big names in the editing business, is the man of “Action!” here.

Indrani reminded us of Kavita Chaudhary who years back did this kind of cop role in the Hindi serial, Udaan, with Kiran Bedi as the obvious reference point. Offscreen, she was making up for her baton-wielding by grinning all the way through the Panditya Basti (pucca houses with TVs and residents with cellphones).

Arghyakamal revealed that his sound recordist lived there, too, and had hinted that it would make for a great location. It was amazing to see the way life going about so routinely while the shoot took place. Interested, but not interested. Going about with the washing and cleaning and chatting and not intruding, as if the film unit was part of their routine rather than the other way about.

“I’m loving every bit of this serial,” grinned Indrani, “but know what I’ve enjoyed the most' I have all the men working under me, and I’ve been regularly kicking Badsha on his backside!” What bliss.
