Child labourers freed in raids
Mumbai (PTI): Child labourers working in zari and gold plating units in Kalbadevi were rescued on Saturday after a joint operation by Mumbai police, the state labour department and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, reports our correspondent.
The three departments, assisted by non-government organisations working for child welfare, conducted raids on industrial units located in the Teli Galli, Pokalwadi, Vithalwadi and Phoolbazaar pockets of Kalbadevi and rescued 291 children from Bihar, Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
eputy commissioner of police Pratap Dighavkar said: “We have lodged cases against the owners of these units under Section 374 of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Juvenile Justice Act. No arrests have been made so far.”
Snakes speed up wedding
Gorakhpur (PTI): Over 500 uninvited guests turned up at a wedding in Kuria village, forcing the bride and the groom to hurriedly exchange their vows.
As the marriage was being solemnised, around 500 snakes emerged from a nearby pond and gathered around the marquee on Friday, sources said.
The guests and villagers started attacking the reptiles and killed around 250. The marriage ceremony was hastily conducted while people held an overnight vigil to keep the reptiles out.
Villagers said the snakes may have been disturbed by the noise of generator sets and, attracted by the lights, had gathered on the banks of the pond.
