No-trust blow to Cong

Malda, Sept. 17: The Congress-run Englishbazar panchayat samity is now set to split ranks.

Half of the 18 Congress members of the samity are preparing to table a no-confidence motion against sabhapati Anwar Hossain.

The Congress deserters have decided to support the CPM as Independents. Of the 29 members in the samity, 18 belong to the Congress. The CPM has 10 members and one Independent.

The Congress had secured the reins of the samity in the last panchayat election after a decade in the Opposition.

Block development officer of Englishbazar Subhendu Basu admitted that a notice had been sent to the subdivisional officer by the nine samity members demanding a meeting to remove the sabhapati on charges of corruption.

'But whether the meeting will be convened depends entirely on the will of the sabhapati,' said Basu.

Hossain, however, claimed that he had 'never indulged in any corrupt practices' and offered to resign if any one could prove the charges being levelled at him. According to the sabhapati, only a few people were trying to oust him. He said he had brought the matter to the notice of the party leadership. 'Now the leaders are handling the issue,' said Hossain.

District Congress leaders have refused to remove Hossain.
