Athens, Aug. 25: Anju Bobby George qualified for the women’s long jump final with a brilliant first leap of 6.69 m at the Olympic Games.
Anju’s first leap was better than the automatic qualification mark of 6.65 m. She is only the second Indian woman athlete to qualify for a final in athletics after P.T Usha’s feat in the 400 m hurdles in the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
Anju was placed in Group A along with strong contender Marion Jones of the US. Anju’s group had several top long jumpers, including world champion Eunice Barber of France. Two other jumpers in the group — Fiona May of Italy and Irina Simgina of Russia — have had personal bests of over 7 metres.
The final will be held on Friday.
