London: England flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson has played down the car crash that could have brought a tragic end to Monday’s day of World Cup celebrations.
The England squad were feted by 750,000 people during an open topped bus parade to mark their victory in last month’s World Cup final in Australia.
They then met Prime Minister Tony Blair at 10 Downing Street and the Queen at Buckingham Palace but while most of them then went on to a testimonial dinner for forward Lawrence Dallaglio, Wilkinson opted to return to Newcastle so that he could start training.
The car in which he was a passenger left the road in Yorkshire and hit a tree but neither Wilkinson nor the driver was hurt. “It was an awesome day that also had something of a memorable finish, but for all the wrong reasons,” Wilkinson said in his column in Wednesday’s London Times.
