Pune: India’s Archana Venkatraman upset top seed Khoo Chin Bee of Malaysia to move into the pre-quarter final of the ITF women’s tournament at Deccan Gymkhana courts here on Tuesday. Archana won the battle of nerves 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in two hours and 29 minutes. She will now meet Mumbai rival Sonal Phadke in the pre-quarters.
Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan, the second seed and winner of the Mumbai leg and runner up Isha Lakhani also stormed into pre-quarters with straight set wins over Liza Pereira and qualifier Sheetal Gautam, respectively.
Archana and Chin Bee traded serves in the fifth and sixth games. Archana, however, broke her opponent’s serve in the tenth game to wrap up the first set.
In the second set, Chin Bee came back into the game, breaking Archana’s serve in the fifth and seventh games to win the second set. In the third set, Archana broke her opponent’s serve in the tenth game to wrap up the match.
Seventh seed Isha took 42 minutes to end Sheetal’s challenge 6-0, 6-1 while Sai Jailakshmi crushed Poonam Reddy of Andhra Pradesh by similar margin. (PTI)
