Mallika applies for bail

Ahmedabad, Oct. 22: Danseuse Mallika Sarabhai, facing a cheating charge, today applied for anticipatory bail at the sessions court here. Justice P.B. Desai will hear the case on Friday.

A former student of the danseuse had, in an FIR lodged on October 18, accused Sarabhai of cheating.

In her complaint filed at Naranpura police station, Manushi Shah claimed that Sarabhai had promised to take her and 12 other students on a tour to the US and charged Rs 3.30 lakh each, but later dropped them and did not return the money.

In her bail application, Sarabhai claimed that the allegations labelled against her “are baseless”. The danseuse said the visa was procured for Brazil and not for the US as claimed by the complainant.

Sarabhai’s advocate R.K. Shah said of the Rs 3.30 lakh taken from the students, Rs 3.10 lakh was returned. The rest was kept as tuition fee. The students had been informed of this and no one had complained, he said.
