After SSKM Hospital’s radiotherapy department, it was the turn of the School of Tropical Medicine (STM) to receive bottles of ‘contaminated’ saline on Monday. Doctors were shocked to find three bottles with a “strange woolly substance” floating in the intravenous fluid.
The bottles were taken to STM director Jayshree Mitra. She ordered that the entire batch of 500 bottles, supplied by a city-based distributor, be removed from the stock.
Later in the day, director of medical education C.R. Maity examined the three bottles. The government has ordered a probe and officials from the drug control directorate are expected to visit the hospital on Tuesday to conduct inquiries.
