Oct. 13: Fresh cases of diarrhoea were reported today from parts of North Dinajpur even as the toll from the outbreak went up to 20 with five more deaths reported in the past 24 hours.
“Till October 11, the outbreak was confined to the blocks of Hemtabad, Karandighi and Islampur. Yesterday we began to get reports of fresh cases from villages in Goalpokhar, Chopra and Chakulia,” said deputy chief medical officer of health Dipak Bhowmick.
Two persons died in Chopra, he said. Two deaths were reported from Islampur. The situation is critical in Hemtabad and Karandighi, where the administration has issued an alert and warned residents not to drink water without boiling or treating it with chlorine tablets.
A team from the North Bengal Medical College found the Shigella bacillus bacteria in drinking water samples taken from these areas.
