Hyderabad, Oct. 4 (PTI): Sania Mirza entered the singles final of the $10,000 women’s ITF meet in Jakarta on Saturday.
According to information received here, Sania defeated Shruthi Dhawan of India 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 in the semi-final.
Sania took a 5-2 lead in the first set but Shruti fought back to level scores. The Hyderabad girl, however, held serve and then broke to pocket the set.
In the second, both went for big ground strokes until a couple of unforced errors by Sania in the 12th game enabled Shruti to even scores. Sania raised her game by a few notches in the final set to race away to a 5-0 lead. Shruti narrowed the lead but Sania ran away 6-1 in the third.
In the other semi-final, Rushmi Chakravarthy had a much easier time beating Thassha Vittayaviorj of Thailand 6-2, 6-3.
Indian duo wins
Vivek Shokeen and Sumit Prakash Gupta won the boys’ doubles title in the grade V ITF junior tennis event in Islamabad. Shokeen and Gupta defeated home pair of Shahzad Khan and Wasif Cheema 6-3, 6-2 in the final.
