Tumkur: India’s Harsh Mankad advanced to the pre-quarter finals of the $25,000 ATP Challenger Series here on Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-3 win over compatriot Karan Rastogi.
On a mixed day for India, another wild card, Somdev Dev Varman, bowed out in the first round, losing 4-6, 4-6 to Italy’s Leonardo Azzaro.
Top seed and world number 195, Michal Mertinak of Slovakia beat France’s Laurent Recouderc 6-2, 6-3.
Now, Mankad is the sole Indian hope after compatriot Sunil Kumar Sipaeya also fell at the first hurdle, losing 7-5, 2-6, 3-6 to seventh seeded Oliver Marach of Austria. Mankad will now meet Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus.
