Paris, Aug. 30 (PTI): It was one jump for Anju Bobby George but one big lead for Indian athletics. The Asian Games gold medallist clinched bronze in women’s long jump at the World Championships in Paris on Saturday, thereby becoming the first ever Indian to win a medal at the world event.
France’s Eunice Barber won gold with a jump of 6.99m while Tatyana Kotova of Russia took silver with 6.74m.
Anju bagged her prized bronze medal with a leap of 6.70m, which surpassed her season best of 6.65m.
Anju’s first jump of 6.61 placed her at the top. Anju fouled her second and third attempts before coming up with 6.56 in the fourth. Then she produced her best in the fifth.
