Negombo (Sri Lanka), July 19 (PTI): Defending champion Deepan Chakravarthy defeated Raja Nachiappan of Hong Kong in the opening round of the 26th Asian junior (under-20) chess championships on Saturday.
Bengalís Mary Ann Gomes started with a win over Sri Lankaís Harshani Konara.
All seeded players, barring G. Rohit, started with easy victories. Rohit drew with Andrew Alan of Australia on the third board. IM P. Magesh Chandran beat Mohammed Ali of Bangladesh in 46 moves. Top seed Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam beat Malaysian Chan Tze Wei.
IWMs Dronavalli Harika and Tania Sachdev won comfortably. Top seed Harika defeated local girl C. Nirmala in 56 moves, while defending champion Tania scored a 43-move victory over Katharyn Ann Cruz of the Philippines.
