New Delhi: National champion V. Harikrishnan has stormed into the second round of the 12th world amateur boxing championship in Bangkok.
According to information received here on Tuesday, the 22-year-old Railways boxer from Chennai defeated Chiang Tzu-Wei of Chinese Taipei with a referee-stopped contest (RSC) verdict in the first round in the light-welterweight (64-kg) class.
Harikrishnan had reached the quarter finals of the junior world championships in 2000.
In another first round fight in the flyweight (51 kg) category, India’s Akhil Kumar, also of Railways, went down to Georgy Balakshin of Russia 16-26.
The two other Indians in the fray are Mohammed Ali Qamar in the light flyweight and Ramanand. (PTI)
