Calcutta: Rohit Chakraborty of Hooghly district earned a ‘double’, so to say, when he clinched the sub-junior boys’ singles and cadet boys’ singles titles at the CLT-BTTA table tennis championships at the Aban Mahal auditorium Wednesday.
In the sub-junior final Rohit beat Mriganka Saha of East Calcutta 11-5, 3-11, 6-11, 11-9, 12-10. In the cadet final he beat Pronoy Moitra, also of East Calcutta, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6.
In the sub-junior girls’ final, Shreya Ghosh notched up a comfortable 11-8, 11-7, 11-6 victory over Gargi Nag.
There was, however, much competition in the cadet girls’ singles final, in which Madhurima Das scraped past Priya Saha 8-11, 11-6, 11-3, 13-11.
After the finals, held in a pretty festive atmosphere, certificates and medals were given by the BTTA to the 120 participants from Calcutta, Howrah, Hooghly, Chandannagore and North 24 Parganas for the summer coaching camp.
The CLT, has its table tennis coaching facility in a floor above the hall, and 70-odd trainees go through the paces six days a week under coaches Robi Chatterjee, Kheya Mukherjee and Amit Pakrashi.
Among the star trainees of the CLT — a programme almost 20 years old — have been Arjun Duta and Shibaji Dutta, both nationally ranked players.
