Burdwan, April 22: In a daring afternoon raid, five motorcycle-borne youths looted a branch of the Burdwan Cooperative Bank close to the district’s border with Hooghly and decamped with cash worth over Rs 7 lakh.
The youths arrived at the Pahlanpur branch of the bank, on the top floor of a two-storyed market, around 1.30 pm and gheraoed manager Tapenendu Bose. Two of them held revovers on his head while the others went about ripping off the telephone lines.
Police said one of the youths slashed Bose’s arm when he tried to resist. He was forced to open the cash box. About half-an-hour later, the manager called bank chairman Chittaranjan Bandyopadhyay, also the sabhadipati of the zilla parishad, to tell him what had just happened.
Deputy superintendent of police Ambika Mukherjee confirmed that cash worth over Rs 7 lakh was looted. “The young men entered the bank posing as account holders. We are trying to get hold of their motorcycle registration numbers,” he said.
