Jodhpur: China asserted their supremacy and emerged sole leaders in the menís and womenís sections after the fifth round of the Asian team chess championships Friday.
With two swift victories in the fourth and fifth rounds, China maintained their stronghold in the menís event. The top seeds beat Vietnam 2.5-1.5 and in the fifth, they defeated Kazakhstan 3-1.
The Chinese women too came back strongly after losing to India A in the third round and blanked India C 3-0 in the fourth round. In the fifth match, they humbled India B 2-1.
In the menís section, India C are placed joint second with Vietnam, both having 12.5 points. China lead with 14. In the womenís section Vietnam trail China by a full point on ten, while India A are third with 9.5 points.
It turned out be an excellent round 5 for India C who beat their seniors 3-1. On the top board Koneru Humpy drew Neelotpal Das while on the second, veteran Pravin Thipsay shared the point with Sriram Jha.
IM Lanka Ravi was in good form and beat double GM norm holder Sandipan Chanda after having accounted for GM Dibyendu Barua in the previous round. On the fourth board Roktim Bandhopadhyay beat R.B. Ramesh. (PTI)
