Tractors, bikes gather speed

New Delhi, April 1: Two-wheeler manufacturer TVS Motor Co and tractor and commercial vehicle maker Eicher Motors have posted higher sales for the financial year 2002-03.

Mysore-based TVS Motor, which manufactures scooters, motorcycles, mopeds and gearless scooters, reported a 29 per cent rise in yearly sales (April-March) while Eicher Motors’ sales grew by 32 per cent, year-to-year, in the commercial vehicles segment.

TVS sold 11.19 lakh two-wheeler units in 2002-03 against 8.66 lakh in 2001-02. “... this is attributed largely to the 21 per cent sales growth in motorcycles during the fourth quarter,” the company said in a statement.

Motorcycle sales leapt by 60 per cent to 4,50,284 units in 2002-03 as against 7,18,553 units in 2001-02, while the gearless scooter segment posted a 6 per cent rise to 1,44,021 units in 2002-03.

Sales of Eicher Motors also rose to 12,717 units last fiscal as against sales of 9,630 units in the previous financial year. Chief executive Rakesh Kalra said the firm has received good market response and posted higher sales in the heavy commercial vehicles segment. “This is due to the superior performance compared to similar products.”

Delhi-based Eicher Motors is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Rs 1,200 crore Eicher group.

The firm manufactures the Enfield brand of motorcycles, diesel engines, automotive gears and components.
